Alternatives to Reference Desk Signs

I’m looking for ideas for labeling, designating, or somehow bringing attention to a reference service point in an information commons environment.  Although we do have a reference desk in our new Learning Commons, a sign for the reference desk was not part of the original plan.  There is at least some feeling that signs are too formal for this type of collaborative space.  On the other hand, there is some confusion for those seeking help, especially if they don’t know that in-person reference service is offered in the Learning Commons.

I’m interested in any ideas as to how to draw attention to the reference service point.  This could be either effective ways to use signage without turning students off.  Or other ideas to help clarify the existence of the reference service point without signs.

  1. How about a tabletop sign, with easel backing, with “Ask a Reference Librarian” on the first line and below it on the second “questions are welcome”?

  2. If you had a giant Lava Lamp high up on top of a shelf unit, now that would attract attention to the reference desk.

  3. I really think that the phrase Reference Desk is meaningless to most people in our communities.
What people understand is Help Desk. Even with this understanding, most people hesitate – for various reasons, to approach the Help Desk. I believe that a great professional approach is to get out to the point of need where clients need our help – in the stacks, at the workstations, etc. But you will need a point to go back to where clients can find you if they have further questions.
This Help Desk point should say – I am on the floor helping clients and I will be right back when you are gone. When you are there it should say Don't hesitate to ask me anything! I am hear to help you. We should be welcoming with our signage, language and furniture.

  4. Something as simple as “Ask Here” may also be helpful. I agree that “Reference desk” doesn't draw people very often. It's part of the old barrier between students and librarians. I hope to get our library to add some signs to our Help desk soon.

  5. I agree with the help desk idea. We are interested in revamping our reference desk area and are incorporating these kinds of ideas for not just the desk but also printer locations, etc. Does anyone have examples of great reference desk areas in academic libraries?
