University of Hawaii librarian selected for 2010 RUSA STARS ILL travel scholarship

Naomi I. Chow, interlibrary loan and external services program librarian at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, is the 2010 recipient of RUSA’s STARS/Atlas Systems Mentoring Award, an ALA Conference travel award designated for those who are new to the field of interlibrary loan.

This award, sponsored by Atlas Systems, Inc. and the Sharing and Transforming Access to Resources Section (STARS) of RUSA, offers $1,000 to fund travel expenses associated with attending ALA’s annual conference. The recipient will be a library practitioner who has worked in the field of interlibrary loan/document delivery or electronic reserves for less than two years, with a daily, hands-on involvement in the areas of borrowing, lending, document delivery, electronic reserves, material delivery or resource sharing.

Chow, who earned her M.I.L.S. from the University of Michigan’s School of Information and Library Science, has worked at the Hamilton Library at the university since early 2009. In her current capacity, she provides services not only for the students, staff and faculty, but also the citizens of Hawaii and the Asia-Pacific region. The committee selected her for her clearly articulated goals for attending the ALA Annual Conference and for the broad impact her networking at conference would have in her daily work. “Networking with seasoned ILL professionals will provide Naomi with the invaluable tools necessary for innovating ILL workflows,” said Danielle Cournoyer, chair of the award committee. “In addition, this experience will not only benefit her, but the large population of ILL patrons her department serves.”

Chow will be recognized at the RUSA Awards Ceremony and Reception, scheduled for 4-5:30 p.m., Monday, June 28, in Washington, D.C. as a part of ALA’s Annual Conference events. The exact location of this event will be announced on the RUSA website and at the RUSA Blog in late spring.
