Boettcher receives 2013 RUSA BRASS Emerald Research Grant for business reference research

Jennifer Boettcher, business librarian at Georgetown University, is this year’s recipient of  the Reference and User Services Association’s (RUSA) BRASS Emerald Research Grant Award.

Administered by the Business Reference and Services Section (BRASS) of the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA), the grant gives $5,000 to support research in the field of business librarianship. The award is generously funded by Emerald Group Publishing, Ltd. Previous award winners’ research projects include a study of business librarians’ involvement in the evaluation and approval of new academic programs (i.e. courses, tracks, graduate degrees or certificates) in business, and an exploration of collaborations among academic libraries, public libraries and community organizations in jointly serving the business information needs of their local entrepreneurs.

With this financial research support, Boettcher will create a Web-based finding aid that will help both business librarians and patrons who do not regularly track business information sources use core business titles that have been discounted, sold or recreated into new formats, which Boettcher calls the “Zombie List”. The database will track these sources and provide a list of where to find similar information that these seminal works provided. Funds will support the work of a programmer who will construct and adjust the database accordingly. As the Zombie List grows, Boettcher will recruit volunteers to test and manage the website as it develops. As a former chair of the BRASS section of RUSA, co-author of the book, “Industry Research Using the Economic Census” (Greenwood Press), a past winner of RUSA BRASS ’s Gale Cengage Learning Award for Excellence in Business Librarianship and former professor of Catholic University of America’s “Information Sources & Services: Business Information” class, Boettcher is well-versed in the field of business reference and is prepared for a project of this scale. In selecting Boettcher’s proposal for this year’s award, the committee highlighted the thorough and detailed methodology, scope, timetable and projected outcomes for the project.

The award will be presented at the RUSA Achievement Awards Ceremony and Reception, scheduled for 5-6:30pm on Sunday, June 30, Hyatt Regency McCormick Place, Prairie Room, as a part of RUSA’s events at the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago. Add the reception to your schedule (ALA Connect login required). For more information, visit RUSA’s website or the Annual Conference website.

Dear RUSA Members and RUSQ Subscribers,

My goal for the journal is for it to be a useful tool for librarians interested in the intersection of theory and practice of reference librarianship in all its forms and in all types of libraries. This issue features columns everything from mobile technology and organic farming to library labs and information literacy assessment. Feature articles discuss reference competencies, consumer health, finding public policy papers, and gender and reading. I think that this issue of RUSQ reflects the breadth of interests and challenges that face RUSA members, and I hope that all readers will find something valuable here.

As always, I am interested in hearing back from readers, so please contact me with your thoughts on ways to make RUSQ even more valuable.

Call for submissions: business librarianship research proposals for 2013 Emerald Research Grant

Submissions will be accepted until April 12 for the 2013 Emerald Research Grant Award  offered by RUSA‘s Business Reference and Services Section (BRASS).

Due to technical difficulties, the award committee asks anyone who has already submitted a proposal to re-submit their materials to Kim Bloedel at kimberly-bloedel@uiowa.edu. New proposals should also be sent to this same address.

The Emerald Research Grant Award, sponsored by Emerald Group Publishing Limited offers one award of $5,000 and a citation to an individual or team seeking support to conduct research in business librarianship. The awards will be presented at the RUSA Awards Ceremony at the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago. Recipients will be required to attend the RUSA Awards Ceremony.

Candidates must submit a detailed proposal outlining their proposed research project; methodology, scope and timetable; how this project fits into the existing literature; and projected outcomes, including a statement outlining how this research will benefit the library profession. Proposals will be reviewed for thoroughness; potential to positively impact the library profession; and potential to provide a useful addition to the existing library literature. Proposals will be accepted from both individual researchers and those working collaboratively. At least one member of a collaborative team must be a member of ALA.

Enhancing Services Through Integration of Interlibrary Loan and Acquisitions

National History Day (NHD) is a highly regarded academic program focused on history for 6th to 12th grade students. For librarians it’s an opportunity to engage students in the challenge and thrill of discovery through historical research as well as promote the use of their institutional resources. Panelists will share their experiences in working with students on the regional, state, and national levels of the competition.

Does Your Data Deliver for Decision Making? New Directions for Resource Sharing Assessment

How do you gather statistics via a focus group?  How do you interpret statistics specifically in Excel?  What do you do with all the qualitative data that you gather and how do you share the work and workload with colleagues? Three different speakers with different approaches will talk about how their information delivers for decision making.  Use this time to learn new approaches to statistics gathering and what worked best for these colleagues (and maybe even what didn’t!).

MARS Chair’s Program: Usability, the User Experience & Interface Design: The Role of Reference
Sunday, 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.
With the advent of new discovery tools and new technology, the habits of our researchers and users have certainly changed. How are we collecting data and observing behavior to improve these interfaces to better meet our user’s needs? How can we learn from what other researchers are studying and use that data to implement change? What is the new relationship between the virtual space, the physical space, and the user experience?

Different Strokes: Serving the Health Information Needs of a Diverse Community
Sunday, 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Medical and health questions at the reference desk can be loaded with unspoken meanings, especially when the patron has different cultural or physical attributes than the librarians.  Panelists in this program will include librarians with expertise in providing medical information to patrons who are from different cultures, speak different languages, are disabled or have literacy issues.  Attendees will learn about health issues facing diverse populations, and resources to assist them in providing reference services.

Digital History: New Methodologies Facilitated by New Technologies
Sunday, 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Digital History is providing new pathways to traditional historical research methodologies.  Helping students and faculty members utilize the myriad of historical research options is becoming a major task for reference and instructional librarians. Panelists will address the opportunities in researching with digital history and the problems they have encountered in using these sources.

Leveraging Open Source Software to Create Library Websites
Sunday, 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Is your library considering using open source software such as Drupal, WordPress or Omeka to revamp your library’s web site, create a digital archive or a staff intranet? Our speakers will provide an overview of open source software and discuss some of their features and capabilities. They will also discuss implementations of the software at their institution including the development process, challenges, lessons learned and practical advice for developing web sites using open source software.

Investment Success! Building & Managing Your Retirement Portfolio

Good personal investment education is important for librarians and library staff. We are an occupational group that is rarely able to access top financial advice. In this program, investment professionals will demystify the process and help us understand essential principles and how to apply them to make better decisions to meet our retirement goals. Preserving Labor’s History

Labor has had a long rich history. For decades, librarians and archivists have worked to collect, organize, preserve and make accessible the important documents that record the history of the labor movement: its progress and triumphs as well as its set-backs. This program aims to highlight the ways in which librarians, archivists and others have endeavored to preserve labor’s history, and have worked to educate generations on the important role of labor in American life.
